English is a fun language to learn (here are 9 reasons why it is so important) and, although it is considered relatively accessible and easy to learn, with 750 000 words and a spelling that can give a hard time even to the most skilled of students, learning English quickly may seem impossible. But I'm here to tell you that it's not like that, provided you have the right strategy.
Use these 10 tips on how to learn English faster as a starting point and master this beautiful language in no time!
1. Read whatever happens to you at your fingertips
Literature classics, pocket books, newspapers, websites, e-mails, social media updates, cereal boxes: if it's in English, read it. Because? Well, these texts are full of new words, as many words that you already know. This helps you to improve quickly, because re-exposing yourself to words you know provides you with new examples within a context, thus reinforcing the words in your mind. On the other hand, learning new words and expressions is essential to build your own baggage of words, especially in a language like English, with so many words! However, do not just read, what you have to do next is …
2. Actively take note of the new words
This advice is recurring for a good reason: it works! When you learn, often you are so happy with a new word or phrase that it seems impossible to forget it. But trust me, not everything remains imprinted the first time. To counteract this trend, take the habit of carrying a nice notebook with you or using tools like Evernote. When you hear or read a new word or expression, write it down and put it in context, that is, use it in a sentence and write the translation. This saves you time, because when you come back to that voice you will not ask yourself "What was the meaning of this word / expression?"
3. Talk with real people
What good is a language if not to communicate? Of course, we humans have become experts in communicating without having to open your mouth (thanks Whatsapp!) But when it comes to the point, the truth is that speaking a language helps to fix it in the mind much better than just reading it or writing it. Think of how many times you've heard someone say that they understand English, but can not speak. Many people who would like to speak English have turned this skill into an insurmountable barrier, which only serves to send them into a panic. Do not be like this. Look for native speakers for an informal language exchange, sign up for a course or take online classes.
4. Register for podcasts or youtube channels (in English)
Do you like humor? Politics? Blogs? To cook? With topics that cover all the imaginable interests, there's definitely a podcast or a Youtube channel in English for you. Subscribe to some of these and listen to it while you are driving or watch it on the way to go to school. At the beginning you may find it difficult to understand the accent, but insist and you will soon begin to understand what you hear (and also learn many new words from native speakers!)
5. Go abroad
You know the best way to learn English is to fully immerse yourself, living and studying in an English-speaking country! It's no secret that English is the most widely spoken language in the world and with a long list of countries to choose from, you can select your ideal learning environment based on your favorite hemisphere, climate or city. What do you think about studying English in England or learning English in America or more exotic places like New Zealand, Australia or why not South Africa!
